7 healthy holiday traditions you can start right now

7 healthy holiday traditions you can departure right now7 healthy holiday traditions you can start right nowThe holiday season may be the most wonderful time of the year, but it definitely isnt always the healthiest. During this season steeped in indulgence, many of our favorite traditions make choosing healthy options difficult. You cant reisepass up Grandmas apple pie or your sisters homemadeeggnog, after all, or neglect to sit throughA Christmas Storyfor the umpteenth time. So although theres nothing wrong with digging into your favorite dessert or lounging through a holidaymovie marathon, why not add some healthier traditions into the mix too? Youll counterbalance some of the seasons excesses - and make it a bit easier to get back to regular life come January. Not sure what it would look like to start a healthy holiday habit? Dont worry, were not talking about replacing your cookie exchange with a kale salad competition Here are seven easy ideas to shake it up this season.1. Try a fun runHoliday fun runs go by many names - turkey trot, jingle jog, Hannukah hot chocolate run - but no matter the title, the concept remains the same. On a day when youre likely to feast, its a good idea to start with some activity. Even if a fun run doesnt take place on an actual holiday, training to participate in a 5K, 10K, or other distance race can keep you working out regularly. Choose a run that supports a cause you care about and make it an annual affair2. Start a family fitness traditionBaby, its cold outside - but that doesnt mean you cant work in some heart-pounding exercise. Depending on where you live, you might establish a yearly post-present hike, a sledding stint on New Years Eve, or just a neighborhood walk after Christmas dinner (caroling not required). Alternatively, stay the fitness course all season long by challenging a friend or family member to a steps competition throughout December.3. Add a healthy recipe to your repertoireHave you perfected the art of thesugar cookieor nailed the greatest pot roast? Maybe its time to let your cooking prowess shine in other areas too. Especially if youre headed to a gathering you know wont have many healthy offerings, be the one to bring a tasty, good-for-you dish. Revel in your new reputation as theSalad MasterorQuinoa Queen.4.Give backFor many of us, the struggle for holiday well-being is as much about mental health as physical health. One proven means of boosting good vibes is to give of your time to others. Why not make volunteering an annual commitment? Serve at a food pantry, donate to a womens shelter, or visit older folks at a nursing home. You may find yourself looking forward to this activity even more than the usual cookie baking and light display viewing. Plus, you might even make some new friends in the process.5. Keep a holiday gratitude journalThanksgiving may have come and gone, but thats no reason to cease counting your blessings. Grab a blankjournaland jot down a handful of th ings youre thankful for every few days. Youll experience thehealth benefits of gratitude- and finish the year with a record of all the great memories you made throughout the season.6. Take a social media breakWhat, take a social media break when you could be posting your cutest Christmas party photos on Instagram? Yep. Overwhelmingresearchreveals that our favorite online platforms actually do more harm than good for our mental health. Comparing ourselves to others leads to feelings of inadequacy, while FOMO (fear of missing out) makes us high-strung and anxious. Saying a temporary sayonara to social media can allow you to focus on your own experience of the holidays, instead of feeling envious of someone elses.7. Host a healthy New Years brunchWhether or not you hit your health goals during the holidays, you can leise ring in the new year right. A healthy New Years brunch with friends may be just the thing to start fresh in January. Invite attendees to bring their favorite dishes f or a healthy potluck meal and to share resolutions. You might even make a commitment to follow up with each other every month. Its one tradition that could help you (and your besties) stay healthy all year long. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

How setbacks help us discover what we truly love

How setbacks help us discover what we truly loveHow setbacks help us discover what we truly loveCharles Duhiggis a Pultizer Prize-winning journalist and the bestselling author ofThe Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessandSmarter Faster Better The Transformative Power of Real Productivity. He recently sat down withSrinivas Raoon theUnmistakable Creativepodcast to discuss why even the most admirable among us are flawed, and how setbacks are crucial signposts on the journey of self-discovery.This conversation has been edited and condensed.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreSriniGrowing up, did you have a hero?CharlesNot really, no. I would actually argue that having a hero is leid a great thing, because its too simplistic. There are certainly people that I admire, people who live with purpose and dedication whose examples I draw a huge amount of inspiration from. Bu t Im very cognizant of the fact that those people are notlage heroic. Because if youre heroic, its not particularly hard to do things. If youre a hero- like a Jedi Knight with a lightsaber- all the obstacles fall away with just a little bit of effort. But thats not how life works.Take Reverend Martin Luther King, who I think is deeply, deeply admirable, and, by the way, welches also a deeply flawed part. He had positives, and he had negatives. And whats most amazing about him is that he dedicated himself to a philosophy of nonviolent protest. Is he a hero? I dont think he is. I think hes something much more impressive- a person who found a purpose, and was willing to make sacrifices and continue working, even when it was not clear that the work was going to be successful.John Lewis was also a major figure of the civil rights movement. In his early 20s, he crossed the bridge out of Selma and was beaten by police officers. But what has actually been most impressive about John Lewis is that since then, since he has been out of the public eye, he has spent the rest of his life serving in Congress, working every single day on things that oftentimes are not successful in order to make the world a better place. Going in and filing some amendment to a bill is not particularly heroic- nobody ever writes, InStar WarsPart Seven, Luke Skywalker files a cloture motion. But thats actually what makes the world change. And those people are deeply admirable, not because theyre heroes, but because they found a purpose, and despite their setbacks, they worked to succeed.SriniI love that. If not heroes then, who would you say had a profound influence on your life?CharlesI dont know- I just dont think that way. I actually think its dangerous to think that way. For people who want aphorisms, or want heroes, or want one figure who solves everything- its a way of telling yourself that you can stop thinking. The only people in this world who are unflawed are super boring people.Let me give you an example. Theres a guy named Lee Lorch who led the fight to desegregate Stuyvesant Town, which is a big housing village in New York City. And he got fired again and again and again from universities for standing up for civil rights, particularly for integration of African-Americans into what had previously been segregated environments. And apparently, from everyone who Ive ever spoken to, Lee Lorch was awful to spend time with. He was combative and obsessive and self-aggrandizing- yet he fought for civil rights his whole life, and he got a lot done.Thats why there are lots of people who I admire, and there are lots of people who I look at and say, I want to stealthatelement of who that person is. I want to stealthatelement of their character. But there isnt just one person, because thats too much to put on one person. Thats too much to put on ourselves. It has to be this mosaic.SriniI agree with you- my perspective on life and creativity has been shaped by more than 600 p eople who Ive interviewed. One of the things that really struck me was when you mentioned how both Martin Luther King and Lee Lorch were deeply flawed. And its funny, because Ive heard that same sentiment echoed about other high-achieving people. Why is it that this deeply flawed nature and the accomplishment of amazing things seem to be birds of a feather?CharlesI dont think its that spectacular people are deeply flawed, and therefore also great. Its that all of us, all human beings, are deeply flawed. People who do great things tend to recognize their flaws, make peace with them, and say, I am flawed in this one way. Let me figure out the situations in which that flaw is a huge strength, and try and put myself in those situations, rather than trying to be an unflawed human being.Because to be honest, the only people in this world who are unflawed are super boring people. You can be unflawed, but that means youre never going to try anything hard. Youre never going to take any risks. Youre never going to make any mistakes. Youre never going to do anything- and thats a recipe for being vanilla. If youre dedicated to believing in something and fighting for it, then by definition, there are going to be flaws in your personality. And once you accept that, then the next step is to say, These flaws are experiments, and Im going to learn where these flaws work, and where theyre drawbacks. And Im going to do everything in my power to maximize the strength and minimize the weakness.SriniSo how do you find the situations in which your flaws become your strengths? This is fresh in my mind because somebody asked me recently about what all the people that I interview have in common. And one thing that I did find is that almost every one of them tooksomething that, on the surface, seemed like a major disadvantage, like dyslexia, and turned it into a disproportionate advantage in their work. The best thing that can happen to us is to encounter some obstacles that test us, and ma ke us think about that motivation, and push us to continue working.CharlesSo I would push back on that, because I dont think thats true. Theres very little evidence that shows that dyslexia becomes an advantage. What we do know is that people who are dyslexic oftentimes learn ways to push themselves, and to be persistent. They develop more grit because theyve had to show grittiness in order to do everyday activities like reading, and that grit spills over into helping them in other settings. But its not like, The fact that Im dyslexic causes me to be great. Its, The fact that Im dyslexic gave me an obstacle to overcome, and I learned skills in persistence that I can now apply to other problems. Now, one exception to that is Chuck Close, the artist. He did what most people refer to as photorealistic portraits- paintings and drawings of people that look like photographs. And then he suffered a stroke. And as a result of the stroke, he was confined to a wheelchair, and he lost the abili ty to do precise brushwork. So at that point, Chuck Close decides to come up with a new form of portraiture, which is to divide the segeltuchschuh into boxes. He says, Im only going to paint individual two-inch by two-inch boxes, and put these boxes in combination. And if you step back from them, they will look like a portrait of someone. He actually became much more famous because of this new style of portraiture. Now, thats a situation where someone has a disability, and they use that disability to do something new and amazing. But not every person who has a stroke becomes an amazing portraitist. Whats important is that Chuck Close said, When I dont have one set of tools available to me, I will find another set of tools that will allow me to continue doing portraits. But its not because of his disability that he did amazing work- he did amazing work, and his disability shaped that work in another direction.SriniThat reminds me of a story I read about the guy who did all the glasswo rk on the ceiling of the Bellagio. He went blind in one eye, and that completely changed the way he shaped the glass, and it actually became much more interesting as a byproduct. So in what seems like a really bad situation, what separates the person who reacts like that from the one who doesnt?CharlesThats Dale Chihuly. And I think actually most people respond that way. There are not a lot of people in history who were super high performers, and then had one setback and everything fell apart. Actually, there are many, many more stories of people for whom everything was always going right, and everyone assumed they were talented, but they had one setback and never recovered- because it turned out that they were just lucky, instead of talented.I think that most people find a motivation that drives their work. And in some ways, the best thing that can happen to us is to encounter some obstacles that test us, and make us think about that motivation, and push us to continue working. The truth is, we just dont know whether we actually are in love with the process until we experience the setbacks. If you look at most politicians who have gotten to the presidency, they often had some period of deep disappointment early in their lives. But its not that they became president because of that setback- its that they had the capacity to become president, and when they encountered setbacks, they knew that they could push through it, because they had this genuine, passionate commitment to the work, as opposed to just the outcome of the work.Theres a huge difference between someone who says, I love making art. I love experimenting with different ways of holding my brush or blowing glass or writing stories, and someone who says, I would love to write a bestselling book, or, I would love to make a great painting, or, I would love to have a famous piece of sculpture. If all youre focused on is the end product, if thats all that interests you, then its very, very hard to make it th rough those setbacks. But if youre fascinated by the activity itself, if youre fascinated by the process and the journey, then the setbacks really arent that big of a deal. Its disappointing, but the setback teaches you a new possibility, a new way forward- like, That didnt work, so now Ill try this. The truth is, we just dont know whether we actually are in love with the process until we experience the setbacks. We might tell ourselves, I dont care if people like my art- I just love making artBut until youve been through it, its very hard to test that thesis. If you find that youre going into work, and the work kind of sucks, and nobody ever appreciates you, but you still like going in every day, you discover, I actually do like doing the work.SriniTo me setbacks are the biggest tests that stand between us and the next level of significance. Something good always seems to come from a setback, even though it never seems like it in the moment.CharlesYeah, but again, I think its really important not to fall into these platitudes- Something good always comes from it. You know what? Sometimes nothing good comes from a setback. Its important to be honest with ourselves and say, Sometimes bad things happen, and thats okay. If you still like what youre doing in the midst of the bad thing, then youre doing the right thing. And if you dont like what youre doing, its okay to say, Maybe I should go do something else.I became an editor about two years ago at theTimes. I loved when we were successful, but when we had a setback, I was like, Ah, this job sucks. Whereas when Im reporting and writing stories, even when theres a setback, its like, Oh, that didnt work, but heres another way to try. I just love reporting, and I love writing. And being honest with yourself, and learning that about yourself- thats when you learn where youre going to be successful. This article originally appeared on Heleo. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

8 Magazines Every Fashion Model Needs to Study

8 Magazines Every Fashion Model Needs to Study8 Magazines Every Fashion Model Needs to StudyOne of the biggest mistakes aspiring models make is not being prepared. Some models who are just starting out will head to a booking after a late night of partying, unaware of how physically and mentally demanding a photo shoot can be.Others forget to bring their portfolio, they leave their model kit at home or dont bother to research the agency or client theyre shooting for. Worst of all, they have no idea what to do when theyre put in front of a camera. This careless attitude can make you seem unprofessional, unmotivated, and consequently, un-bookable.?A major part of being prepared is simply making the effort to get a good nights sleep and checking, then double-checking, that you have everything you need. But its also important to do your homework, and that doesnt mean studying textbooks and taking online quizzes. It means immersing yourself in the modeling world and learning from those at t he top.Let Magazines be Your GuideHands down, the easiest, and most enjoyable, way to learn the business is to spend quality time with your favorite fashion magazines. As you flip through the pages of these fashion bible publications, study the models and observe how they have moved theirposition, how they areposed, and how they express different emotions.Learn about the designers, photographers, and note the models names. As an exercise, tear out pages with the shots you like best and practice what you see. Dont stop practicing until youve perfected the mood, the pose, the expression. Soon youll have the confidence you need to appear effortless in front of a camera.Remember that many so-called fashion magazines are filled with nothing but celebrities. Theyre an interesting read, but if you really want to make your research worthwhile, stick with legitimate high fashion magazines that use real models. The best ones include 01VogueLOfficiel HommesThis biannual magazine, adapted fromL Officiel,is entirely dedicated to fashion and does an excellent job of showcasing the seasons trends. It was created by a stylist, not a journalist, and has become one of the worlds top authorities on mens fashion.

How to Beat the Competition to Unlisted Jobs

How to Beat the Competition to Unlisted JobsHow to Beat the Competition to Unlisted JobsGet a jump on other job seekers - and HR - by knowing the type of people who hear of positions before theyre ever advertised.I always draw a clear distinction between the front and back doors of career transition.Consider this Every single person reading this article has either gotten a job through someone they know or knows someone who has. Yet too often that incident is treated like a neat little coincidence or synchronicity, not recognized as a lesson about how an effective career transition really takes place.Matter of fact, a participant in a recent workshop confessed that every job in his life came through connections, so he always figured he just didnt know how to find a job. Think of that Hes been doing it right all along, but he leise felt guilty that he wasnt doing the same-ol-same-ol front-door stuff like everyone else looking for open, advertised positions and applying as one of the lemming hoards. To understand why 80 percent of all jobs are filled before they are ever advertised - and why the back door is better than the front door - lets look at a job openings life cycle. Lets consider a hypothetical department in a hypothetical companyPhase 1 A position is going to open up, and only a handful of people know. There is no position open, but, by the miracle of creation, a position will open up soon. Lets say Clarice is moving to Lima, Ohio, or Joe isnt cutting it the boss wants to get rid of Joe, but not before shes found a replacement. At this point, there are people who know that an opening is coming. Well call them the people in the know. What are they doing with what they know? Telling their family, friends and acquaintances, of course. Why? Because if there is a desk open beside you, wouldnt you rather fill it with someone you know than run the risk of HR putting in some sniveling weirdo? Of course you would. Its in your own best interest. But, as Joe or J ane Jobseeker walking up to the company today, youll get routed to HR - the first stop for unknowns - and will be told that the company doesnt have a job because HR doesnt know about it yet.Yet, all the while, the people in the know are talking to others they know. Folks are moseying in and having casual conversations with the boss and getting jobs.Phase 2 The department gets wind that a job is opening up.In this phase, it is general and open knowledge in the department that a position will be opening and there is movement toward getting a job requisition over to HR. But how long does that take? In some organizations, it can take weeks or months. Yet, as Joe and Jane Jobseeker approach the company, HR again informs them that there are no jobs - because the position is still not official or known. (Joe and Jane may feel free, however, to input themselves into the companys huge database for future reference.)Whats happening back over at the department? The people in the know are s till talking to friends, relatives and acquaintances, and folks are still coming in, having casual conversations and getting jobs. Oh, youre Judys friend Grab a cup of coffee, sit down, lets talk. Eighty percent of all jobs are filled by the end of this phase.Phase 3 HR finally receives the job opening from the business unit. Now HR has been officially informed, and theyve put out the word in the publicized job market. They are inundated. Ten thousand resumes for one position. Now Joe or Jane Jobseeker coming through the front door has a competitive stance of zilch and their negotiating position is no better. If you dont like what the companys offering, there are 9, 999 people right behind you who do.At this point, you no longer enjoy the casual back-door interviews you would have had by being known by someone in the know in the earlier phases. No, now you have adversarial interviews with HR. God love HR, but theyve got a tough job - they have to whittle 10,000 resumes down to one. So they are going to look for why youre notright for the job rather than why you are.Lastly, one final nail in the coffin of the front-door method If you think about it, a lot of people knew about that job before it was advertised. How come its still open? Maybe its not a plum position. To summarize, front-door knocks get youCompetition from everyone and no negotiating stanceAdversarial interviewsProbably not a plum position (remember, lots of others knew about it already)While back-door moseying gets youCasual conversationsNo noticeable competitionThe leg up of personal referralTherefore, my question is Why would you ever focus on the front door in your career-transition efforts? Its just not a wise use of your time. Sure, maybe keep your eyes peeled in case some fluke comes through the front door that may be worth an inquiry. But Id rather see you use an advertised position as a guide post to creating back-door connections rather than believe that those avenues will actually net y ou a job.Think about it If that company has that position, dont you think its competitors have similar positions? Use ads simply as road maps to locate who you should be getting to know through research of interests and industry issues. (An ounce of research is worth a pound of job search.)Get to know those people before a position may necessarily be open. That leaves you as someone the people in the know know when openings inevitably arise.

How to Lead a Team

How to Lead a TeamHow to Lead a TeamLeaders are hard to find- at any level of your organization. Leaders exhibit a unique blend of charisma, vision and character traits that attract people to follow them. They exhibit the other nine characteristics around which this article series was developed as well. But, mostly, as they exhibit these leadership traits and characteristics, they become the part that other people want to follow- even choose to follow given the opportunity. Respected leaders know that they cant just walk into a room and say, Hey Im the leader. Follow me. If youre the boss, you can get away with this attitude to a certain degree, but the followers you attract will be compulsory and not following you by their own choice. They will heed your advice and obey your commands, but it is involuntary followership based on your organizational hierarchy to a large degree. Leaders understand that to actually lead most effectively and successfully, they need to attract people who want to follow them. How Leaders Attract Followers Leaders recognize their need to attract followers. Followership is key to understanding leadership. To follow, people must feel confident in the direction in which the leader is headed. To have this level of confidence, the leader must have clearly communicated the overall direction, the key outcomes desired, and the principal strategies agreed upon to reach the outcomes. Then, employees are enabled and empowered to do their parte in accomplishing the stated objectives. They have the framework that they need to guide their own actions. And, empowered employees do want to guide their own actions. You will fail as a leader to your best employees if you ever forget this fact. One of the key factors in whether an employee stays with their current employer is that the employee has confidence and trust that the leadersknow what they are doing. This confidence gives employees the control they need for their livelihood and supporting th eir family. Further, leaders people follow are accountable and trustworthy. If progress towards accomplishing the goals ceases, the leader takes responsibility to analyze the problem- they dont search for people to blame. Consequently, people can have confidence that their leader wontpunish them for their efforts if they take reasonable and responsible risks that are well thought out and well-founded. They are accountable and responsible to deserve their leaders confidence and trust. Followers Expect Leaders to Recognize and Reward Them for Their Success Followers need to believe that, at the end of the journey, their leader will recognize and reward them for their contribution. The leader must help followers answer the question, Whats in it for me? Successful leaders are honest about the potential risks inherent in the chosen path as well as the potential rewards. They communicate, not just the overall direction, but any information their followers need to successfully and skil lfully carry out their responsibilities. They recognize that for their followers to perform most effectively they need to understand the big picture. They also know that their job is to remove barriers that may have anegative impact on the employees success- not to micromanage how the employees accomplish their work. They need to know why the organization is pursuing the current strategies. They need their leader for guidance and to help remove any barriers they may experience along the way. Mostly, they need the assurance that their leader has confidence in their ability to perform and produce the desired outcomes. If any of these factors are missing, leaders will have a tough time attracting followers. At the end of the day, it is the entwining of the relationship of the leader with the followers that makes their organization or portion of the organization succeed. When the Leader Is Also the Boss Occasionally, the leader is the person who is in charge, the founder of the busi ness, the CEO, the president or department head. Leadership qualities combined with positional power magnify the ability of an individual to attract and retain the all-important followers. In fact, business owners can count on a certain amount of respect and followership based on their ownership and title. Longevity, too, plays a role in attracting and retaining followers. People who have followed the leader for ten years are likely to continue to follow unless they lose trust in the leaders direction. But, never forget, no matter what your position is in the organization, even if your current job is a valued contributor, you can become a leader that other employees want to follow. In fact, in organizations, one of the reasons employees are promoted to positions such as team leader, supervisor, or department manager, is that they have demonstrated over time that people will follow them.

Priorities The Stepping Stones to Achieving Your Goals

Priorities The Stepping Stones to Achieving Your Goals Set a goal, make a plan, do the work.Thats a phrase used often regarding physical fitness and working out, but it applies to everything. Figure out what your priorities are, outline the steps to get there, and then do it.Seems simple, right? It is actually surprisingly difficult for many people to set and meet goals. To improve your success ratio, its important to make your goals reasonable and attainable and to avoid these typical errors when setting prioritiesPitfall No. 1 Too Many PrioritiesThe human brain is wired to do only one thing at a time, if that thing is to be done excellently. Studies are frequently questioning the validity of multitasking, concluding it is leidhing more than task switching. With every switch, the lag time between tasks increases and productivity declines considerably. The law of diminishing returns kicks in when focusing on more than 3-5 significant priorities for an y given period of time.Pitfall No. 2 Vague PrioritiesUnclearpriorities that dont answer the five Ws who, what, when, where, and why are predisposed to failure, or at best, underachievement. A target you cant see is difficult to hit.Plus, a priority must be measurable. If you cant measure it, you cant manage it. The only way to see the progress of each of your priorities all the way through to completion is to have some way of quantifying that goal.Pitfall No. 3 Priorities Without Visibility and AccountabilityBeing accountable to others creates an internal commitment to not let them down. Its like the tree falls in a forest concept If not a single other person knows what youre trying to accomplish, whos going to know whetheryour goal was met? Priority Best Practices1. Dont Set More Than 3-5 Significant Priorities at a TimeThis will allow you to really focus in on eachpriority and to complete them with your best foot forward, without spreading yourself too thin. Better yet, select o ne priority as yourNo. 1 priority. This priority is the fruchtwein important and takes precedence over all other priorities if all hell breaks loose.2. Set Clear Parameters for Each PriorityMake sure your priority covers the five Ws, so you know exactly what your focus is on and why. Then, find a way to quantify your goal, such as completing X number of workout videos by the end of the month. When you work through your goals one step at a time and you are able to check them off your list, youre more motivated to keep going. Its also important for your goal to have a due date. The urgency of a deadline is a great motivator to action, which is why priorities with some time constraints are most effective. Otherwise, you could just keep putting your goal off untilit disappears forever. And dont forget to celebrate your successes. Positive reinforcement and affirmation are critical to continuing success in setting and meeting priorities. Praise, rewards, and team celebration will sustain t he positive momentum of the priority process.3. Be Accountable to OthersShare your goals with others and commitpublicly to their completion. This way, people can cheer you on and help you stay on the right path. Make your priorities visible to yourself and others so both you and your supporters can follow your progress. Keeping yourself on track can be as simple as creating a dashboard that tracks the key performance indicators for each priority, so you can see your results as you go.In order to reach a goal, you must make that goal a priority, and you must be willing to focus on the steps it will take to get you there. Completing your most important priorities is critical to reaching longer-term targets, both in your personal and professional life. By following these simple guidelines, you will significantly increase the odds of your success.David Pierce is a certified Petra Coach. Contact him at davidpetracoach.com.

5 ways to avoid feeling jealous at work

5 ways to avoid feeling jealous at work5 ways to avoid feeling jealous at workIn a hyper-connected, fast-paced work environment, it can be easy to feel like youre just not measuring up to others on your team. Add a star coworker who always seems to be on your managers good side, and pangs of jealousy can start to set in.Heres how to avoid letting feelings of envy bog you down at work.Remember, that star coworker is human, tooYou both get up, go to work, and have successes and failures at work and at home. In other words, you are both human, and make mistakes. While it may seem like everything is always going your coworkers way, dont hold them up on a pedestal They have bad days, too.Think about what you bring to the tableDont forget your own talents your coworker may have skills you wish you had, but you cant forget what youre good at. Dont let their expertise and/or flair eclipse your success.Assess the fairness levelHarvard Business Review says that you should think deeply about wh ats going through your mind, and assess the level of fairness when youre having trouble being happy for a coworker who wins at work.Take a hard look at whether any of your negative feelings are justified or should be addressed. If indeed the playing field is uneven, or some favoritism was involved, then think about whether you want to talk about it constructively with your manager, a colleague, or an HR representative, the piece says. If, however, the other person succeeded fair and square, consider how you can use the other persons achievement as motivation for yourself. What can I learn from what she did? What do I need to do differently to be recognized and rewarded in the future?Think about what you have in commonFormer C-suite corporate executive and entrepreneur Glenn Llopis writes about how envy prevents us from connecting with others professionally in Forbes. We cant build respect and trust for one another and therefore lift each other on a foundation of envy. How can you b uild a network when envy stands in the way? Why envy someone elses career aspirations when success is now measured by your influence, Llopis writes. Think about the influence you can share with others rather than the barriers to advancement envy creates when networking. So try to find common ground.Come up with a plan to move forwardInstead of ruminating on what you dont have, work on improving yourself.High Performing Teams consultant and coach Shawn Kent Hayashi writes in The Muse about how you should ask yourself what changes can I make? when youre envious of a coworker. She says that after you think about what you want more of in your professional life, you should take this approach.Start with small steps like volunteering for different kinds of projects, speaking up when you have ideas, or signing up for a class to build out a new skill. It may be that you feel a bigger step is necessary. If you realize that every leader at your organization has an MBA, look into local programs - and see if your company has any resources for tuition reimbursement, Hayashi writes. Taking any step toward your desired goal - whether its a baby step or a giant one - will move you out of envy and into a more positive mindset. If you stop dwelling and start doing, your focus and drive will return, and so will your more rational, sociable self.

7 Simple Mistakes to Avoid During a LinkedIn Profile Makeover

7 Simple Mistakes to Avoid During a LinkedIn Profile Makeover 7 Simple Mistakes to Avoid During a LinkedIn Profile Makeover Social Media has changed the world. Whether you like it or not, it appears that it is here to stay! Although LinkedIn has been around for years, many people do not take advantage of all the features at their disposal. Make sure you are aware of these 7 simple mistakes to avoid during a LinkedIn profile makeover. Pose for the camera! Regardless of your thoughts, it is very important to have a profile photo. You do not need to go out and get professional headshots taken (although, I am not judging those that do). A person is much more likely to pass up your profile if you do not have a picture. If this is you, don’t worry. I was that guy once too! Have someone snap a headshot (above the shoulders) of you, it is that simple.See 5 Tips For A Perfect LinkedIn Profile Photo for more details about adding a profile photo for your LinkedIn profile makeover! Whatever picture you choose, NO DUCK LIPS! An unprofessional photo is worse than no picture. Trust me when I say that LinkedIn is different than the standard social media sites. We will describe the difference a little later. Can I have your number? I was told growing up that you should not provide personal contact info on the internet. Well, if you are using LinkedIn during your job search, at least provide your email address. It’s pretty tough for a recruiter to reach you if you don’t provide your information. But what about the private message feature? That’s great and all, but recruiters are limited to the number of InMails they can send. Make it easy for them and provide your contact info by adding your contact info to your LinkedIn profile makeover. While you're at it, customize your LinkedIn URL! This looks much better than the random series of numbers and letters you are given originally. How’s your headline? It is important to separate yourself from the average user on LinkedIn. Your headline is one of the first things that someone will see if your profile comes up in a search. You must be strategic in choosing the appropriate headline for your LinkedIn profile makeover. Be careful what you read because I see more bad headlines than good. Sample Headlines Worst:“Desktop Support Technician at Stuff Junk” O.K.:“Desktop Support Technician in Market Leader in Retail.” Best:“Desktop Support Technician in Market Leader in Retail. Gadget Enthusiast.” For more on LinkedIn Headlines, check outLinkedIn Headline Ideas That Don’t Suck. Don’t forget keywords! If you have read anything about a resume makeover, you know that keywords are too important to ignore. Your LinkedIn profile is a lot like your resume in many ways. So check outHow To Use Resume Keywords When Applying For Jobsand apply these lessons to your LinkedIn profile makeover. For recruiters to find you, they search certain keywords commonly used in a given industry. For them to click on your profile, you need those words! I am assuming you get the picture. If you are struggling to find keywords for your line of work, a simple google search will show you the way. These keywords will bring recruiters straight to your profile. Is your summary off track? For some reason, someone made it cool to write your resume summary in the third person… Lame, I know! Luckily for you, your LinkedIn Profile Summary can be in the first person. This is your chance to brag a little so don’t be afraid to list your accomplishments! Stick to 3-5 paragraphs of your most relevant and flattering career experience. As stated before, your LinkedIn should mirror what is on your resume. Make sure your work experience lines up with what is on your resume. Don’t invent positions that do not appear on your resume as you will be called out in an interview. Using LinkedIn like Facebook This happens all the time, especially in and around the 2016 Presidential Election. There is a reason why LinkedIn is considered a PROFESSIONAL social media site. This is not the place to share the pictures of your weekend hangout with your buddies. Your LinkedIn profile should be used to grow your professional network in order to advance your career. On that note, be cautious about linking your LinkedIn profile with your other social media pages. Nothing will stop a recruiter in their tracks like a link to your profanity-ridden Facebook page. I suggest limiting access to any pictures a hiring manager can judge you on. I promise your efforts will be rewarded in the long run! Pointless connections It is true that you should not add just anyone to your network on LinkedIn. But, I would rephrase that a bit to state you can add anyone who has connections in your industry. If you feel someone may be a valuable connection, add them! Some think that you should only add who you know personally, but networking is all about meeting new people. The worst a person can do is not add you back, but don’t be a creeper and continue pursuing an individual. The first few hundred connections are very important! This is what determines who LinkedIn suggests for you to add. If you add a bunch of non-industry specific connections, that will do you no good. 4 things to do before you get out of bed for your most productive day ever

4 things to do before you get out of bed for your most productive day ever 4 things to do before you get out of bed for your most productive day ever While it’s no big secret that having a solid  morning routine  helps set you up for a productive day, I say what you do  before  you even get out of bed is just as important. These are the top 4 things I have found make a huge difference in my daily life. Even if I have to be up for work at 6:30 am, I like to set my alarm 10-15 minutes earlier, to do these things and ensure I have the best day possible!1.    Avoid reaching for your phoneThe first one is more of a what  not  to do. Many of us  (including me at times)are guilty of reaching for our phones first thing when we’re still half asleep in the morning. Whether it’s to catch up on the numerous notifications you’ve missed while sleeping or to check your email,    this almost always ends with  aimless scrolling on Instagram  and Facebook. This not only delays you actually getting out of bed, but also means you’re not starting your day in a very healthy or intentional way.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ maga zines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!I notice when I don’t check my phone first thing in the morning, I spend less time scrolling throughout the day… Sometimes I even forget to check Instagram (shocker!)  The point is, as humans we were not designed to be consumed by technology devices 24/7 - especially not first thing in the morning!Which  leads me to point number 2:2.    Take a moment to breathe and be presentWhen was the last time you allowed yourself 5 or even 10 minutes to simply do nothing?Instead of reaching for that phone, take a moment while either lying or sitting (I prefer to sit up. Otherwise you may fall back asleep!), and simply be. Take several deep breaths and remain present. Even if I have a million things to do, or have to be out the door early in the morning, I like to set my alarm 5 minutes earlier, to allow time for this simple practice. If you have more time, really make the most of it and incorporat e a meditation practice. I love to use the  meditation app  Headspace. It has loads of different breathing and guided meditations. Or, check out my friends at  Mindspo, who are an awesome mindfulness and meditation company â€" they have tonnes of content and even an online meditation school.Whether you have 5, or 20 minutes, be sure to take a moment before you begin your day to simply sit and breathe. It’s so simple, yet so effective.3.    Write it outThe power of journaling is limitless. I’m a huge advocate of writing anything that comes to mind, whether it’s for clarity, to make sense of thoughts or express whatever is going on in my mind. I like to keep a journal and pen on my bedside table, so I can do this while I’m still in bed. Every morning is different: sometimes I jot down to-do lists, write daily or weekly goals, or even create a simple gratitude list. I especially notice a HUGE difference in my mind and day when I write down 5 things I’m thankful for. These ca n be as simple as my awesome friends, loving family, the opportunities in my life - you get the gist. This is an awesome way to start your day as it allows you to get yourself in the right state of mind to handle whatever your day holds.4. Express gratitude While it’s no big secret that having a solid  morning routine  helps set you up for a productive day, I say what you do  before  you even get out of bed is just as important. These are the top 4 things I have found make a huge difference in my daily life. Even if I have to be up for work at 6:30 am, I like to set my alarm 10-15 minutes earlier, to do these things and ensure I have the best day possible! Tell Me About a Time You Did Something Wrong

Tell Me About a Time You Did Something Wrong Tell Me About a Time You Did Something Wrong Often we go into an interview prepared to sell ourselves to the interviewer. That’s definitely something that you will want to do, but you also need to prepare for the worst. It can be a shocking surprise when you walk into an interview expecting to talk about how great you are, and someone asks you to tell them about a time you did something wrong. There is a reason you are being asked this question, so it’s important that you take some time to familiarize yourself with the main points to emphasize, and some common mistakes to avoid, especially for the50 Top Job Interview Questions and Answers. Main points to emphasize Focus on how you handled the situation. Instead of giving a ton of information on what you did wrong, give just enough insight to go into detail on how you positively handled the situation. Stay Positive! Express self-development and growth. Just because you did something wrong in the past does not mean that you have not grown and learned from your mistakes. Common mistakes Avoid being negative! Although this is a negative question, you want to focus on the positive. Don’t claim to be perfect. Saying that you have never done something wrong is just ridiculous and a sure way to eliminate yourself. Avoid dragging a coworker into the situation. Try to focus on something that YOU did wrong, and how YOU handled it. Sample answer “A couple years ago, my manager came into my office and asked me why she had not received my most recent report. I explained that I had sent the report over, and had absolutely no idea why she had not received it. She then asked me to resend it as soon as possible. The next day, she asked me why I had still not sent the report over. Again, I said that I did. Finally, after doing some digging, I had realized that I was sending the report via my personal email address, instead of my work email address. This was causing my report to go directly to my manager’s spam box. As soon as I found out, I informed my manager of the problem and resent the report on my work email. Since then, I have been extremely careful about what email account I use.” Check out Find My Professionfor all of the latest career advice. Science Majors

Science Majors Jobs for Environmental Studies/Science Majors Environmental studies or environmental science (ES) majors study a  broad range of topics and may have several types of professional options.  If you are a student in these fields, youll need the scientific aptitude to understand and apply complex concepts in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics and will learn to apply both quantitative and qualitative analytical skills to solving problems and interpreting research data. Your creativity will be tapped as you design research models to study environmental issues. Your ultimate career path will depend on the unique configuration of skills, interests, and values you bring to the table, but it will help if you are passionate about topics like sustainability, conservation, ecology, global warming, and alternative energy sources. Environmental Consultant Organizations of all kinds need to prepare environmental impact studies when they are planning to develop virgin land or use currently developed land for an alternative purpose.  As an environmental consultant, youll use analytical tools to assess how development projects might impact the water, soil, air or wildlife in the area. When problematic impacts are identified, you will suggest ways to ameliorate the potential effects. In other cases, you might be brought in to address existing problems- like pollution- and to recommend solutions. Youll tap the writing and presentation skills honed as an ES major to compose technical reports and deliver recommendations to clients. Environmental Educator ES majors gain a broad-based perspective on environmental issues which can serve you  well as an environmental educator. Youll need to digest available information to learn about the environment surrounding your geographic area of practice and rely on your training to collect and interpret information and to conduct fieldwork. Its important  to convey a sense of excitement in your interactions with visitors or students, and public speaking skills polished on campus will help you provide dynamic presentations. Public Relations Specialist Environmental organizations need to influence public perceptions to gain political and financial support for their initiatives.  As a public relations specialist or communications staff member, youll use the knowledge acquired as an ES major when generating press releases about programs and activities at your employers or clients organizations. Youll use writing skills cultivated through your ES studies to develop content for the websites of environmental entities and to help compose text for fundraising brochures and letters. Environmental Attorney If you choose to go to law school after earning your ES degree, your scientific knowledge will be an asset when  working with clients on environmentally related cases.  Youll interview expert witnesses like environmental engineers, biologists, chemists, and other environmental scientists as they prepare and litigate their cases. Youll need to interpret scientific material and evaluate the validity/reliability of those findings. As an  attorney, youll rely on the writing skills developed as an ES major to compose legal briefs and other documents. You may help draft the language for environmental regulations if you work for a governmental entity. Environmental Engineer When technical solutions are required to resolve problems with environmental contamination or pollution, environmental engineers often are  called upon to propose and implement those systems. In this role, youll draw upon knowledge of environmental science when designing environmental technology and tap the quantitative skills developed as an ES major when calculating the physical dimensions of systems. Youll be expected to  write proposals for projects and present recommendations to clients that show youve researched and defended a position collaborated with other professionals, devised solutions and presented them in a clear, concise way. As a sustainability specialist, youll assess the environmental practices and impact of an organization and recommend and implement strategies to conserve resources and limit environmental damage. Knowledge of scientific methodology is essential to carrying out sophisticated assessments of the impact of current operations on the environment and determining what conservation benefits are derived when alternate processes are implemented. Youll tap the writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills developed as an ES major to write proposals and urge colleagues to adopt alternative practices. Policy Analyst Generating realistic proposals for environmental policy requires an in-depth knowledge of scientific concepts. As an ES major, you should possess the aptitude for learning new scientific information as well as a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, and physics needed to fulfill this role. Your  research skills will help to uncover information related to public policy recommendations, and your analytical and statistical skills will help to interpret and process that information. Tech Jobs Increase Across US, Bay Area Employment at All-time High

Tech Jobs Increase Across US, Bay Area Employment at All-time High Tech Jobs Increase Across US, Bay Area Employment at All-time High The San Francisco Bay Area is known for housing a host of things: the Golden Gate Bridge, the Giants, Redwood trees and a ton of technology jobs. The number of tech jobs can be attributed to the Bay Area serving as the headquarters to Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo and Salesforce, just to name a few. To say the Bay Area is enjoying growth in tech jobs isnt much of a headline. However, today the region is reaching record levels of employment.  This has as much to do with technology as any other industry.  The continued tech boom in the Bay coincides with continued growth of tech jobs around the country. Each month Simply Hired takes a look at our data to find insights into employment trends around the U.S. During November job openings increased in 11 of the top 25 largest metro areas in the US. The largest gains were in Tampa and St. Petersburg (2.48 percent) and the San Francisco Bay Area (1.98 percent). Technology led all industries with a 6.35 percent increase. Technology also led all industries in the Bay Area in terms of job growth. Early in November the San Jose Mercury News reported the Bay Area was poised to reach all-time high levels of employment, breaking records set in the previous dot-com boom. This growth, it reported, was because of the current technology renaissance. This accomplishment stands as testament to the Bay Areas ability to overcome the calamities of the tech bust, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, corporate scandals, and, most recently, the Great Recession.”  This trend looks to continue. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Google is continuing to expand its offices, this time into Bay Area city of Redwood City, while Box and RingCentral also plan to expand their offices in the region. The growth of tech in the city of San Francisco proper has disrupted the traditionally financial-centric downtown area, with more and more office buildings now housing tech companies. It’s going to continue, and it’s going to be more and more difficult to hire very skilled IT professionals because at this point you’re hiring them away from your competitors,” said  Dakin Gunn, Robert Half’s director of permanent placement services in San Francisco. Today Simply Hired shows the top hiring tech companies in the Bay Area are Apple, Google, Oracle, IBM and Intel. Click here to search tech jobs in the Bay Area. Career Skills and Lessons Crucial for Long-Term Success

Career Skills and Lessons Crucial for Long-Term Success Career Skills and Lessons Crucial for Long-Term Success This quote comes into mind whenever writing about career skills and career lessons learned too late in life: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou, Poet, Dancer, Producer, Playwright, Director, Author The reality of every career is that, at some point, we take a stand for what we believe, defying the advice given by others. Then, we learn why we were wrong. That is just fine! Why? Oddly, people need to learn from their own failures. If we all just believed everything we were told, we would not see the same value in lessons learned. So, when a post like this comes along sharing career skills and lessons, it is smarter to learn from others’ mistakes. This way, you don’t have to go through it yourself! Why you should never burn bridges or damage relationships This career skill requires emotional intelligence. Work relationships are still relationships. If you are important to a company your departure may be upsetting, especially those who had invested time in training you. You cannot always control how people react to you leaving a business, but you can control your own actions. Always try to leave a company with gratitude and on a high note. This career lesson will help you protect your career relationships in the long-term. What makes work and family relationships important One of the most interesting things I hear from retired Baby Boomers who made their money in the 1980’s on Wall Street: “If I had to do it all over again, I would spend more time with family.” There is a great emphasis today on staying productive and employed, but the reality of life is that we are more productive human beings the more we feel loved and acknowledged. The family provides that support unconditionally. The most successful entrepreneurs often express why their success is attributed to the career skill of properly managing their work and family life. The family is a support system that makes work life much easier. And the family’s support makes taking risks much easier. How to manage a social media presence Over the last 10 years, many have used social media to reveal too much about themselves. Social media is a form of public media and should be viewed as a marketing tool, only. Unless your job requires career skills in marketing your public life, keep your social life offline. How short a career and life really turns out to be This career lesson is a tough one. In the bigger picture of life, the time between ages 20 to 40 go faster than the time between birth to age 19. When we dig into our career, we spend time learning a trade and attempting to prepare for retirement. However, before you get a chance to think, 10 years have passed and you are halfway to age 40. The older people get, the less they start to get paid. The behavior of businesses to pay the wisest and experienced employees less is irrational, but it happens. That is why I try to warn people that our most productive, obligation-free years in our career shoot by very fast. Make the most of them! Today’s workers will spend more time getting paid less or retired. No doubt, this is a broken aspect of business that will be forced to change in the next 20 years, as we live longer and our needs change. Why love is the most important thing in life!!! Yes, it is true! It takes time to figure out this career lesson, Admittedly, when I used to hear it I would dismiss it as “mushy nonsense” But then I became an uncle, and two years later, met my wife through online dating. A sense of epic meaning overwhelms a person who is presented with another human to love unconditionally. When you have a person you would do anything for, work takes on a whole new meaning. Supporting that person provides a sense of accomplishment that tends to make for a happier employee and/or boss. The older I get the more I am glad I chose to put family, first. Ultimately, when it comes down to jobs and loved ones, loved ones will be there for you always, unconditionally. Work relationships are conditional. How to call your own shots in your career Master these three career skills, if you want to call your own shots in a career: Become a builder, creator, engineer etc. Be your own boss of your own business all the time. Treat everyone you meet with the same respect you desire to be treated with. There is agreater reward in career skills learned from being your own boss and having your own life. In the United States, alone, freelancers make for 35% of the workforce and collectively earned $1 trillion dollars in 2016. When your career is over, the long-term successful feeling will come in the form of knowing, “I did it my way”. And the only person you could blame for your failures and successes is the person in the mirror!

Caring less about your work is healthy. Heres how to do it right.

Caring less about your work is healthy. Here's how to do it right. Caring less about your work is healthy. Here's how to do it right. Yes, you can love your job too much. When we pour ourselves into our work, we may be rewarded for this effort by our employers, but our bodies and minds will pay the toll. Cognitive behavioral research has found that there is such a thing as becoming too attached to our jobs - to the point where they take over our identities.Charged emotions like too much happiness or negativity can also compromise our ability to think clearly. A 2014 study found that people who were in neutral moods significantly outperformed people who were in positive and negative moods in problem-solving tasks. The researchers of this study suggested that this neutral mindset helps people work smarter because it helps them focus. “Emotion has a detrimental effect on performance because resources are otherwise allocated and not available to solve the task at hand,” the study stated. To do our best work, in other words, we need to learn to let go of our charged emotions around our performance and productivity. O nce we change how we feel about work, we can change how we think at work. Here’s how to do it right:1) Recognize that you are more than your jobWho are we outside of our 9-to-5? This is a question we need to answer to understand how to build healthier relationships to our work, according to cognitive behavioral therapy principles. The dangers of attaching yourself to work are most clearly seen when you lose a job that you were too attached to having. When you lose a job, you may find that you don’t know how to describe yourself outside of what you do. That’s the wake up call Ladders readers advised employees to recognize after a layoff: “Know that work doesn’t define you.”When we tie our identities to our jobs, we are tying our self-worth to external validation from situations outside of our control. Bosses quit, employees get laid off, companies get shuttered. When your job becomes your entire identity, rejections about your work projects feel like a rejection of your en tire being. To handle the inevitable setbacks in our careers, you need to take a step back and prioritize your personal relationships as much as your professional ones. You need to redefine what success can mean for you outside of shiny accomplishments and titles. That way, everyday work annoyances and big career upheavals won’t upset you.We cannot necessarily predict how our work will be received, but we can change how we will receive it.2) Set boundaries with your energyEnergy vampires lurk in every office. Stopping them starts with identifying what tasks and people drain you, so you can avoid these people and set aside time to refuel and recharge. Not enough of us set these boundaries.  Harvard Business Review  argues that too many employers and employees are in a contract of mutually assured destruction to extract as much energy from each other as quickly as possible.Introducing breaks to get up from your desk, talk with colleagues, or do other energizing activities can break t hese destructive patterns. “While breaks are countercultural in most organizations and counterintuitive for many high achievers, their value is multifaceted,” the article argues. “To recharge themselves, individuals need to recognize the costs of energy-depleting behaviors and then take responsibility for changing them.”To stop the risk of burnout, employees need to put as much energy toward keeping their spirits up as they do toward completing that report.3) Protect your time offNot letting work consume you also starts with monitoring and managing the time it takes you to do work. Are you staying late at work because you really need to or to keep up appearances? Do you never give yourself a night off? Some of the most hardworking people I know also are deliberate at blocking off personal time for themselves. They even make calendar alerts for that time, so that the personal time off is seen as important as the professional meetings on that calendar. Career experts agree that explicitly scheduling time off helps us keep promises to ourselves.“Schedule your time out,” career coach Roy Cohen advises. “We are less likely to break a date with ourselves if it’s a standing date.”These tips are all to help us leave work at work, and stop a job from becoming an unhealthy obsession. Learning to disconnect and detach from work allows us to come in each day in the best mindset possible to do it.
